Licensed Land Surveyor (Williamsburg, Virginia and the surrounding areas)

Preferred qualifications:

  • Must be licensed in Virginia with 10+ years of experience in surveying including topographic, boundary, and ALTA surveys; platting; construction staking; elevation certificates; preparation of legal descriptions, easements, etc.

  • Knowledge of engineering design and construction practices

    Nine Month, Non Tenure Track Position

    Great Basin College (GBC) is searching for a highly qualified instructor in land surveying and geomatics. The instructor will be teaching and assisting in oversight of a Land Surveying/ Geomatics program leading to a Bachelor of Applied Science degree. The program prepares students to become registered professional land surveyors with a math and science background. This position is expected to last for two years (beginning in August, 2014). This position is to teach the last students in the program as the program is brought into suspension. Depending on the status of funding, student demand, and other circumstances, it may be possible for the program to extend beyond the two-year closing period.

    The position will be based out of the main GBC campus in Elko, Nevada, though other locations will be considered. The primary mode of delivery for the courses taught will be through the Internet (online). Support will be provided for adapting to the technology, but the successful candidate should have strong familiarity with the online learning environment. The array of courses expected to be taught during the two years is listed below under responsibilities.


  • A minimum of a Masterís degree in a relevant field of study and a background course of study that contains extensive land surveying and/or geomatics is required

  • Strong interest and ability to teach, with previous teaching experience preferred

  • Ability to teach Internet-based surveying/geomatics courses; some assistance will be provided

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with students, other faculty, and administrators

  • Professional land surveying licensure or registration within a state, preferably Nevada, or the ability to get such licensure, and the ability to teach the skills needed for graduates of the program to obtain licensure

  • A minimum of two years of work experience as a land surveyor or in a closely related field

  • Ability to use and teach on modern equipment using computer applications in land surveying and geomatics

  • Affiliation with at least one professional land surveying society is preferred.

  • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively within a small college setting.
